Jared Horney

Peer Recovery Coach

My name is Jared Horney and my last name could possibly be a reason why I ended up as an alcoholic and addict. My 15 years of active addiction included multiple treatment centers, countless detoxes, and homelessness. After many rather ungraceful attempts, I've now gratefully been in active and sustained recovery for over 3 years and have been working in the addiction/recovery field for about as long. My experience has been primarily in the treatment environment in both inpatient and IOP-based programs. I became intrigued about what exists after treatment, and I believe that resources like AFRC speak directly to that – to explore what true recovery looks like and what forms it can take in a participant’s life. I always found it rewarding and fulfilling to interact with others, particularly in the recovery space - to search for a luminous chance for beauty and compassion mingled with the darkness that many of us have experienced. Here's more about me:

Favorite previous jobs: Professional Dog-Petter, Licensed Attitude Adjuster

Favorite drink: double espresso, light cream

Hobbies: music, writing, reading, deciding to forge the river at the end of the Oregon Trail and dying of dysentery.

Books: One of my all-time favorites has been Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins. Short stories by Tobias Wolff. Autobiographies.

Song: One that has lived in my head perpetually, regardless of my feelings about the song itself, is "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind.

How do you know when a joke becomes a dad joke: when the punchline becomes apparent.

I'm very happy to be involved with Advocates For Recovery. Please feel free to reach out if you have any extremely personal questions for me.
